The Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust are looking for people to join their new Response Volunteer Scheme at their hospital sites in Shrewsbury and Telford. Volunteers that can respond to service pressures and demands will provide key support to wards and departments, particularly in the difficult winter months, when we see a high rise in demand.

Response volunteers are assigned to a hospital rather than a specific ward or department. These volunteers carry a mobile phone, which means staff can contact them from across the hospital to provide help where it is most needed, when it is most needed. They will be able to do a wide variety of tasks including pharmacy runs, tasks to support the discharge team, delivering patent belongings and messages to the ward and supporting staff welfare.

If you are interested in finding out more about the role and our application process, please contact the Public Participation Team on 01743261473 or email sath.members@nhs.net.

An appeal has been made for people keen on sewing to help make sleepwear for patients at Shropshire’s two acute hospitals.

The nightwear will be for those patients who do not have a spare change of clothes because COVID-19 restrictions or isolation has meant relatives are not able to get to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford or the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Instead they will be able to wear the gifted nightgowns or pyjamas instead of a standard hospital gown whilst in hospital, and when they are discharged home.

Joanne Yale, Head of Facilities at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, which runs both hospitals, said: “We are appealing for anyone who likes to sew to help our patients and we would welcome night gowns and pyjamas.

“These would be gifted to patients who do not have access to their own nightwear, and this is especially useful when they are discharged as they can take them home with them.

“Relatives often may not be able to drop off items because they live too far away and are restricted due to COVID-19, or they may be isolating. If we are able to gift their loved ones some nightwear, families will know they have access to a change of clothes that isn’t just a standard hospital gown – but nightwear that is homely, and theirs to keep.

“Any nightwear would need to be small, medium, large or extra-large in size, easy to wear and should be able to provide a high degree of modesty – with no loose threads. They also need to be made from fire retardant material.

“Our fantastic communities have greatly supported our hospitals so much throughout this pandemic by gifting many different items for our staff, and we thought it would be wonderful if they were able to help once more.”

The Trust would also gratefully accept new, shop bought gowns and pyjamas if they fit the same criteria (easy to wear, high degree of modesty, no loose threads and made from fire retardant material).

Anyone who would like to help should please contact we.supportsath@nhs.net or call 01743 261473

Users of Glebeland Playing Field and nearby residents, please note the following:-

In the last few days there has been a flurry of notes exchanged which led to a zoom conference call yesterday afternoon attended by representatives of Shropshire Council Estates team, Cornovii Developments and Bayston Hill Parish Council. Cornovii, who are a wholly owned by Shropshire Council, hope to secure the contract to develop the site which has already received outline planning permission for 50 houses. Ahead of that contract being awarded and a detailed planning application being presented to Shropshire Council Planning Dept agreement on the land asset viability and valuation is now being worked on. Cornovii have engaged a specialist firm to undertake a Ground Investigations Survey involving 2 drilling rigs (not for oil !) that take core samples of the geological structure below. The company engaged to do the survey have offered a slot starting next week, Monday 18th January 2021 as a diary window opened due to a cancellation. Initially, in the first week, they will undertake drilling on the old school site and the following week move onto the playing field. There has been a clear request to operate in the safest manner and public access will be permitted, with the drilling rigs fenced off. The drilling will be carried out in daylight and there is some noise to contend with, we thank nearby residents and users of the Playing Fields for their forbearance. The ground area where the rigs have drilled will be properly restored. Additional information was also provided concerning likely timeline, the results of the survey above are expected in early March, then agreement on valuation between parties will be sought, then the Developer will be appointed and the full planning application over the site should be submitted before the year end. Construction work is likely to commence in the first half of 2022.

PRESS RELEASE

Wednesday, 16 December, 2020

Make Sure You Are Stocking Up Over Christmas    and New Year

Make sure you are stocking up for all your health needs over the Christmas and New Year period, say health bosses at Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs).

With the festivities fast approaching, check that you have the essentials such as ibuprofen, paracetamol, antiseptic cream, plasters and indigestion treatment at home.

All of these are available to buy without a prescription at a small cost from a pharmacy, supermarket and other stores. Your pharmacist will also be able to give you free advice on minor conditions and over-the-counter treatments.

If you have a regular prescription, make sure you have enough to cover the festive period and you collect it in advance.

GP practices in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day Bank Holiday (Monday, 28 December) and New Year’s Day, but there are other services available.

For anyone who needs urgent medical help or advice they can call NHS 111 for free 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or they can access the service online at 111.nhs.uk.

A number of pharmacies will be open for limited hours, on a rota on Christmas Day, Boxing Day (Monday, 28 December), New Year’s Day and the weekends. You can also download the NHS App to check symptoms, book GP appointments during normal opening hours, and request repeat prescriptions.

Dr Julian Povey, Chair of Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG), said: “We want everyone to enjoy their Christmas and that’s why it is important that people think ahead and get in anything they may need to keep them healthy.

“Your local pharmacist can offer you free health advice without the need of an appointment, or if you are feeling unwell and need urgent health advice call NHS 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk.

“Remember we can all help look after ourselves by stocking up on the essentials to treat minor ailments at home.”

Christmas Tree on The Parade
4th December 2020

A little distraction from our usual maintenance programme today.

Your Parish Council - 1st Tier Local Government, closest to the community it serves have listened. Your volunteer councillors and their employees have worked hard to bring you a Christmas Tree to mimic what took place in Trafalgar Square today - the lights were lit. It is not a gift from Oslo, Norway but many have given, Oswestry Christmas Tree Farm for smashing service and great value, Bayfield Vehicle Hire Shropshire Michael Money who laid on transport on Monday, the BaystonHill Jingleation team for recommending 4000 lights, Alan Roberts - Wizard with Electrics, and our Handyperson team, Roger/Rachael/Dave.

We hope the community gets a lift by this.
